Racing Towards the Finish Line!

ELA5R2:
The student consistently reads at least twenty-five books or book equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words) each year. The materials should include traditional and contemporary literature (both fiction and non-fiction) as well as magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and electronic material. Such reading should represent a diverse collection of material from at least three different literary forms and from at least five different writers.

I will ensure that each student understands this Standard and that they are capable of documenting their progress accordingly. Every month we will look at the progress of the each student and move their shoes to the number of words that they have read. We will be "Racing towards the Finish Line."

The 25 book Campagin is also known as the 1,000,000 Word Campaign. Students will read books and keep track of their reading on a reading log. Students are required to document their reading daily, as well as, write a brief summary on what they read; pages and chapters, authors and so forth.

For every 150 pages read, it equals one book, and one book totals approximately 40,000 words.

Example: I read 325 pages, so I divide 325/150 = 2.167, then I multiply by 40,000. So my total words read are 86,666 for one book.

The 25 Book Campagin will begin the first week of school.
